A Study of Identification and Quantitative Analysis of Circulating Immune Complexes in Pulmonary Cancer Patients

Abstract
By the method of 125I-Clq binding assay with polyethylene glycol
precipitation, circulating soluble immune complexes (ICs) were identified from sera of 22
lung cancer patients.
Sera obtained from all patients bound higher percentage of Clq than healthy normal
controls and the average value of Clq binding was 13.5%.
The patients with squamous cell type showed higher Clq BA upto 23% than the other
cell types of carcinoma. Follow-up data were available for 5 patients before, during and
after the therapy. One patient of oat cell and two patients of squamous cell carcinoma
showed decreased Clq BA level after chemo-and/or radiation therapy but Clq binding
values were rather stable in one patient of adenocarcinoma and one patient of
bronchioloalveolar carcinoma.
Higher Clq BA was detected in cases of adenocarcinoma, poorly differentiated, and all
the patients with metastasizing carcinoma.
However there was no good correlation between Clq BA value and clinical symptoms
or the presence of complications of pulmonary carcinoma.
Quantitative measurement of IC in the sera could be possible by plotting the
percentage of Clq binding with human monomeric ("native") IgG and heat-aggregated
human IgG adding to heat-inactivated normal human serum.
Clinically, overt IC diseases were not found in all cases of lung cancer.
